Website Communications Strategy for Sea of Nations

Healthy Seas | Thriving Coastal Communities | Strong Cultures
Timor and Arafura Sea Region

Sea of Nations is a cross-border initiative working to protect the Timor and Arafura Seas and strengthen the rights, voices, and livelihoods of coastal communities who depend on them. The campaign connects Traditional Owners, fishers, and advocates across Australia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia to call for greater transparency and shared ocean governance.

I was engaged to develop and deliver a comprehensive communications strategy to support the organisation’s early growth, clarify its messaging, and prepare for a public launch.

Role: Communications Strategist - 9 week Contract

Strategic Communications Development

My role began with creating a clear, unified message for Sea of Nations that captured its purpose and potential. Through research and consultation with board members and partners, I developed a communications strategy and narrative framework that balanced advocacy, cultural respect, and ocean science.

The strategy guided brand positioning, tone of voice, and storytelling priorities, ensuring all communications reflected the campaign’s integrity and long-term vision. It also defined the scope for phase one of the launch, outlining what would be included on the public website and what would follow as the organisation’s internal strategy and partnerships evolved.

Branding and Digital Presence

I worked closely with the Sea of Nations team to build the organisation’s visual identity and online presence. This included guiding brand style, drafting website copy and structure, and creating key messaging for future use across social media, donor materials, and partner communications.

The goal was to make the campaign recognisable, consistent, and accessible to diverse audiences, from policy-makers to coastal communities, while maintaining authenticity and respect for local voices.

Impact

The communications strategy positioned Sea of Nations for a successful public launch, providing clarity, consistency, and credibility across all platforms. It established a strong foundation for future fundraising, partnerships, and storytelling, and continues to guide the organisation’s growth and outreach today.

Being part of something from its first spark to public launch reminds me why I love this work - helping ideas with heart and purpose find their voice and create real impact.
