Community Engagement for Banyula Conservation Reserve
Community-Led Conservation in Action
Gumbaynggirr Country, Pillar Valley NSW
Banyula Conservation Reserve, part of the Corymbia Biodiversity Project, is where my work in community engagement, creative communication, strategy and on-ground conservation has come together all in one place. Over the past few years, I have helped shape how people connect with this place through the website, newsletters, workshops, events, creative storytelling, partnerships, and case studies that celebrate real conservation impact.
Role: Brand and Communications Lead (Paid Contract)
At Banyula I work with landholders, researchers, Traditional Custodians and conservation partners to build community participation and protect threatened species like the Glossy Black-Cockatoo and Coastal Emu. My role combines facilitation, creative design and strategy to make conservation approachable and lasting.
I’ve contributed through:
Community engagement and facilitation – designing and leading events that connect people, share knowledge and inspire collective action
Creative storytelling and design – building Banyula’s brand, website and visual identity, and creating signage, posters, videos and digital content
Strategic communications – translating science into clear, motivating messages that attract supporters and volunteers
Collaboration and mentorship – helping landholders and groups strengthen partnerships and develop confidence in their conservation goals
Banyula holds a special place for me. It represents the heart of my work, combining strategy, creativity and community to protect the places we love.
“Jen Oceans has been helping our biodiversity project since 2022 in community engagement, marketing and design. Jen has been an integral part of our journey in that time, contributing to both strategy and implementation and has built our connections to individuals and groups quickly and effectively.
In addition, Jen is a pleasure to work with, always bringing energy and skill to whatever is the challenge”.
